Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

What is the difference between the CPNRE Predictor Tests and the CPNRE Prep Guide?

The CPNRE Prep Guide is designed to help you review and integrate the concepts you have learned in your practical nursing program; it will also help you assess your skills in applying that knowledge. The Prep Guide can be used to enhance your readiness to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination. In comparison, the Predictor Test is designed to help you gauge your readiness for the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam. By using the CPNRE Prep Guide and conducting an analysis of your performance on the CPNRE Predictor Test, you will be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses and develop a more focused study program.

What is the difference between the CPNRE Predictor Tests and the Practice Exam in the CPNRE Prep Guide?

The Practice Exam found in the CPNRE Prep Guide is a 180-question sample test that is built according to the CPNRE Blueprint. The primary purpose of this sample test is to help the candidate prepare to write the CPNRE. Candidates are provided with a full sample test along with an answer key, rationales and two current references. Candidates can also create a performance profile to identify areas of strength and weakness. As such, it is an excellent study tool. The Prep Guide Practice Exam is available in a paper-based format and on CD-ROM.

The CPNRE Predictor Test is a 100-question sample test that is also built according to the CPNRE Blueprint. However, the primary purpose of this test is to gauge a candidate’s readiness to write the CPNRE; it is not primarily a study tool. At the completion of the Predictor Test, candidates are provided with a performance profile and a probability of passing the CPNRE. For a 24-hour period, candidates can also return to their completed Predictor Test to see which questions they answered correctly and incorrectly; however, they are not provided with rationales or references. The CPNRE Predictor Test is available exclusively online. It is not available in hard copy or on CD-ROM.

If I buy both Predictor Tests, what is the best way to use them?

Depending on your situation, the two Predictor Tests can be used either together or separately. When taken at the same time, greater precision in gauging your readiness to write the CPNRE can be achieved. This may be most informative for candidates who have only a short period of time before the CPNRE administration date. In contrast, when the two tests are taken separately, the results of the first test can be used to develop a more focused program of study. After studying for some time, the second Predictor Test could then be completed to re-assess your readiness to write the exam and provide additional focus before the CPNRE administration.

How is my probability of passing the CPNRE calculated?

By comparing your performance on the questions in the Predictor Test to the performance of thousands of candidates who have written previous administrations of the actual CPNRE, we are able to estimate what your score would be on the CPNRE. From this estimated score, we can calculate your probability of passing the CPNRE.

Can I review the questions after I have submitted my answers?

Once you have completed the Predictor Test and submitted your answers, you will be presented with a summary of your performance that includes your score on the Predictor Test, your probability of passing the CPNRE and a scoring profile showing your score in each of the competency categories tested by the CPNRE. At this time, you can review the questions and the correct answers. For up to 24 hours after completing the Predictor Test, you will be able to log back into your test using your assigned username and password to review the questions and answers. After the 24-hour period is up, you will no longer have access to this information.

The time limit for the Predictor Test is 2.5 hours (150 minutes). The test comes equipped with a timer to simulate an actual examination environment.
