Preparing to Write the CPNRE

Prepare to write the CPNRE by reviewing how you can best perform in the testing environment. Here are some test-taking strategies:

General Strategies

  • Read the Test Book instructions.
  • Focus on one question at a time.
  • Read the question carefully.
  • Unless you are absolutely sure, be cautious about changing your answer. Very often your first choice is correct.
  • If you are not sure of the answer, guess. There is no penalty for guessing and you will not lose any marks if you select an incorrect answer.

Strategies for Multiple-Choice Questions

  • Familiarize yourself with multiple-choice questions.
  • Take advantage of the process of elimination.
  • Be familiar with common test-taking errors. The CPNRE Prep Guide contains a list of these common errors.

Use the CPNRE Prep Guide

The CPNRE Prep Guide is designed to help you review and integrate the concepts you have learned in your practical nursing program; it will also help you assess your skills in applying that knowledge.

The Practice Exam instructions, test-taking strategies, question rationales and sample answer sheets within the prep guide can be used to enhance your readiness to write the CPNRE. The CD-ROM should also prove beneficial.

Use the CPNRE Predictor Test(s)

The CPNRE Predictor Test is a tool designed to help you gauge how ready you are to take the CPNRE and to help focus your studying by identifying areas in which you are weak. It provides you with the following:

  • Your score on the Predictor Test;
  • Your probability of passing the CPNRE;
  • Your scoring profile which displays your score in each of the competency categories tested by the CPNRE. This allows you to determine in which areas you need to focus your studying;
  • The ability to review the questions and correct answers for a 24-hour period.

Once you have completed the test and submitted your answers, you will be presented with your results and the option to print them. Your results will also be e-mailed to the e-mail address you provided when you purchased the test. For a 24-hour period, you will also have the opportunity to log back in to your test to view the questions and correct answers again.
